Huge Crowds in Liverpool for Giant Spectacular Sea Odyssey
The impact of the incredible spectacle that takes place in Liverpool this weekend cannot be underestimated. The City was thronging with people for the procession/performance by Royal de Luxe. This is an ambitious investment in the power of art to affect and inspire people. The economic returns from this investment will undoubtedly help to secure Liverpool’s status as an ongoing Capital of Culture, and make the link between art and regeneration palpable for those involved. Liverpool City Council evidently “gets it”. Free events such as this bring many thousands of extra customers into their City, but it is clear that the benefits for local people has also been considered. The route taken by the incredible giant puppets takes them through Anfield and Everton as well as the city centre. I have rarely seen anything so beautiful and yet so accessible. The vast audience were clearly engaged. I can’t wait for the next installment of the Liverpool Biennial this autumn.

Thanks for sharing these photos Steffan. Yes you are so right Liverpool is very definitely a city that ‘gets’ the importance of art. My experience of visiting and exhibiting in Liverpool is that it is a city with lots of warmth, humour, enthusiasm and general open mindedness.
Great pictures, I wish I was there!
