My Favourite Danish Band: Efterklang

17Oct12

While in Denmark I came across my new favourite band, Efterklang. Pirimida is the latest album, I think the 4th. It all began in August 2011, when the members of Efterklang (Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg) went on a nine-day audio expedition to an abandoned Russian settlement in Spitsbergen, an Arctic island located just shy of the North Pole. Spitsbergen is home to more polar bears than people and also to the ghost town of Piramida, which was abandoned overnight in 1998, and today stands as a slowly decaying ruin still full of physical memories like the world´s northernmost piano.

Unfortunately I bought the CD and only when I got back to Wales did I discover there was NO CD in the beautifully packaged case. The artwork is lovely, but for now, while I’m waiting to hear from them, I have to put up with these YouTube videos.

The band collected over 1,000 sound recordings and inspiration for the album which was subsequently written and recorded in Berlin.

Accompanying Hollow Mountain is a specially-commissioned visual piece created and directed by Oodls (Jakob Steen & Christoffer Frandsen). The clip features the band’s own photos from their trip to Piramida as well as elements of Piramida album artwork (designed by Hvass&Hannibal).

The initial tones of Hollow Mountain are the sounds of one of Efterklang many discoveries in the ghost town of Piramida. For more info on this please see: http://efterklang.net/home/?p=1157

With contributions from Earl Harvin (drums, Tindersticks), Nils Frahm (wurlitzer), Peter Broderick (strings) and the 60-piece South Denmark’s Girls Choir, Hollow Mountain is a grand opening statement to Efterklang’s fourth studio album.

The music video for Apples is created and directed by Hvass&Hannibal in collaboration with Oodls (Jakob Jakob Steen & Christoffer Frandsen). This is the first time ever that Mads, Casper and Rasmus of Efterklang make an appearance in an Efterklang music video.

Besides the newly filmed material, the video features shots from Andreas Koefoeds documentation of the band’s trip to Piramida. Apples feature contributions from Earl Harvin (drums, Tindersticks) and the brass players from Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra.

The music is delightfully melancholic and has a lamentable sense of loss and isolation. I love it.

Rasmus Stolberg & Casper Clausen from Efterklang talk about the creation of Efterklang, their upcoming album ‘Piramida’ and what it meant to play at Sydney Opera House for Vivid LIVE.
